Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
