A comprehensive search and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost boats loaded with relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Efforts Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least nine personnel, as stated by a military release.

The boats had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Background of Aid to Cuba

The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures multiple national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort stated.

The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Recent Humanitarian Shipment

Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy tensions have increased lately, with comments from various representatives highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking government figure declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to find the boats and ensure the well-being of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
