This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence On Speculators

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop featuring special items. Fans will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. For collectors, though, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus at the pop-up. This shop is scheduled both the physical location and online between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated volume filled with stunning artwork depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. The concept is the kind of research a Pokémon Professor could produce once trainers provide field notes, alternatively a naturalist's journal might have created if the Galapagos teemed with flying-types rather than birds. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as a legitimate subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Promo Card Stand Out

It is common to issue to release promos for big events and brand collaborations. A lot of these collector items often feature the famous mouse Pokémon who serves as the series face. The factor setting this latest museum card is its distinctly bigger size. While precise specs have not been immediately shared, its distribution is guaranteed to be strictly limited, and customers limited to only a single card with each transaction.

Curbing Reseller Interest

Per a company statement, a portion of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the institution itself. But, a wider release will only be select retailers in the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase this promo via the official web shop. While reseller interest is a given, it appears they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those feeling left out, there is an alternative like Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to the Windy City later this year.

"Every penny of sales made in the Museum shop and its online store, which covers these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to scientific inquiry and finding solutions to the global ecological crisis," it notes.
