A shadow economy for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
