Larian Studios Explains Its Implementation of Machine Learning for Upcoming Divinity Game

The team behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its upcoming project, generating immense anticipation within the gaming community. However, subsequent statements from the studio's figurehead have introduced clarity to the conversation, focusing on the studio's philosophy toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent clarification, Larian's director explained that the developer is utilizing AI technology for particular preliminary functions. These include developing presentation materials, generating rough artistic references, and drafting draft copy.

Notably, Vincke made clear that the final assets in the game will be crafted entirely by real artists. "Larian is developing everything manually," he said.

Our studio is continuously increasing our pool of writers and are currently putting together narrative groups.

Since concept art is being specifically called out — we currently have twenty-three visual developers and have job openings for more creatives.

All our efforts we do is supplementary and designed to having people spend additional energy on the creative process.

Any machine learning application used well is a boost to a creative team workflow, never a stand-in for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The news of using AI initially provoked concern among portions of the community. In reaction, Vincke offered additional clarification on public forums.

"We use these tools to gather inspiration, just like we use search engines and art books," he stated. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then substitute with original illustrations."

He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their creative vision, not for their capacity to follow what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had previously outlined the team's focused strategy to this technology, defining its use into key pillars:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This includes refining animations, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using tools to rapidly prototype rough models of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive production.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how AI could in the future enhance new forms of reactivity, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He specifically affirmed that central narrative disciplines — like music composition — are are absolutely not departments where the studio is replacing artistic talent. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these precise positions.

"Larian is neither launching a game with any AI components, nor looking at reducing staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
