Israelis have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership delayed official memorials until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The official stated the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Matters in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies deliveries
  • Post-war administration of the area

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages return not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Near the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population desire the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the fear arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area indicated additional dead people had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, medics stated.
