Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Discussions Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh game mode called Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key adjustments:

  • Every squad includes just 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
  • Actions done by human gamers grant full XP, while AI activities offer reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of locations are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State.
  • Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking are disabled.

In short, this mode lives up to its title: it's a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives additional choices for players looking for different ways to enjoy the game. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, many BF6 fans are upset.

Community Responses: Anger to Support

"People want real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," states a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," and someone else details everything they consider to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."

However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this title 24/7. Let them strike a balance," states a different comment. A response on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while another praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Constructive Concerns and Player Input

Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it will make wait times more extended for other modes because of the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on fighting AI opponents.

Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was promised to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate XP farming from the system. Thus this new playlist feels like the player base compromising in the middle, as per a Reddit comment. Another describes this addition as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments that were overly hard got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
