There are "no preparations" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital soon to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with those familiar claiming the president had pressured him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would simply constitute a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the war demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Moscow's terminology for a range of comprehensive conditions that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the United States was planning to provide long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he added.
